A drug-free community coalition supporting positive youth development in Franklin County.

About us: Franklin County Caring Communities is a positive youth development & substance abuse prevention coalition.

Our vision: A safe and healthy community that values all its members.

Our mission: Caring Communities promotes conditions that build healthy communities in Franklin County by supporting positive youth development and substance abuse reduction. We do this through a collaborative process that engages community members in dialogue and issues identification, connects members to resources and information, and recruits and equips members as community leaders.

We support positive youth development and substance abuse prevention through community, school, family, and peer action. We aim to change community norms that support unhealthy behaviors in partnership with you--parents, youth, organizations, businesses, law enforcement, concerned community members.

The heart of Caring Communities is asset development. According to Search Institute, there is a direct correlation between healthy choices and the possession of developmental assets, such as support, empowerment, boundaries and expectations, constructive use of time, commitment to learning, positive values, social competencies, and positive identity. Social Development Theory (Hawkins and Catalano) identifies similar protective factors: pro-social bonds, "life" skills, such as refusal, negotiation, and decision-making, clear expectations for behavior, caring and support, high expectations for success, and opportunities for meaningful involvement.

Our coalition is a recipient of a Drug-Free Communities Support Program (DFCSP) grant through the US Department of Health and Human Services, SAMHSA); Strategic Prevention Framework Grant from the Vermont Department of Health's Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs (ADAP), and a Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities grant from the State of Vermont Agency of Human Services.

Caring Communities is a member of the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) and the Vermont Drug and Alcohol Coalition. We are a member of our regional Partnership, Franklin Grand Isle Community Partnership.
