Be careful of your thoughts, for they become your words. Be careful of your words, for they become your deeds. Be careful of your deeds, for they become your habits. Environmental strategies -- changing community norms

Environmental strategies are approaches/activities/initiatives that change community norms and conditions in your neighborhood, town, county, or state that support or promote substance use. Some examples include:

  • Reducing the number or density of liquor outlets in an area.
  • Reducing or eliminating storefront/outdoor advertising for alcohol or tobacco products.
  • Asking retailers to limit underage access to tobacco products, rolling papers, and gear with alcohol, tobacco, or other drug advertsing and pro-use messages.
  • Discontinuing beer tents at community festivals.
  • Neighborhood watch programs.
  • The Vermont teen use line (1-866-TEEN USE).
  • Creating substance-free workplaces.
  • Check out http://www.udetc.org/documents/strategies.pdf and http://www.prevnet.org/spfsig/common/pdf/environmental_strategies.pdf for more on environmental strategies.

Underage drinking--
it's not just a minor problem.

How are our local liquor outlets doing? Caring Communities would like to commend those local liquor outlets that consistently pass compliance checks, as well as those that have recently improved their compliance. In the month of September, 11 out of 13 outlets passed their compliance checks, including 3 who had failed earlier in the summer. We also commend the Vermont Department of Liquor Control for stepping up compliance checks in Franklin County. This is an added incentive to retailers to ensure that all their staff receive adequate training and take our state's underage drinking laws seriously. Visit http://liquorcontrol.vermont.gov/enforcement/ to see which stores and restaurants have passed compliance tests and which have not.
